When Mads Tolling, the two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist, takes the stage, be prepared for the definition of virtuoso to become clear. From the age of six in Copenhagen, Denmark, Tolling has honed his craft by studying world-class musicians and refining his own vision of old and new classics.

Touch a map anywhere, and you’re likely to find the location of one of his diverse concert venues: the Danish Embassy, Radio City Music Hall, Hollywood Bowl, and the Library of Congress, to name a few. Requests for concerts have come from nations such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany.

Beloved also by Bay Area music aficionados, Tolling was commissioned by Music Director Michael Morgan and the James Irvine Foundation to write a violin concerto for the Oakland Symphony Orchestra. The highly anticipated 2015 performance at the Paramount Theater was a sell-out: 3000 seats.

In addition to performing solo, Mads collaborates with a wide range of musicians, forming groups such as Mads Tolling and the Mads Men and the Mads Quartet. Musical selections may range from songs of the 60s to Latin jazz. From gypsy tunes to tango. From classical to rock.

Not content with simply being a world-class musician, Tolling is actively training upcoming musicians in the educational aspects of jazz and improvisation. He has been active as a Yamaha artist and clinician and has led workshops and masterclasses throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Dubai and Japan. His latest offering includes a 100% online course entitled The Ultimate Violin.

Mads Tolling is a man of many talents. In the words of Jean-Luc Ponty, a revered master of violin in the arena of jazz and rock:

“Mads has the amazing talent and skills few young musicians can match. His music is both beautiful and refreshing exhibiting his superb mastery of the modern American jazz music that is rarely seen among his peers.”

Oakmont Lifelong Learning proudly presents the Mads Tolling Trio with Frank Martin on piano and Gary Brown on bass.
